DescriptionChinese export porcelain plate decorated with a central scene depicting Mount Vernon. Painted in coral-red with a diaper, scale, trellis, and butterfly border and in the center with an oval scene in sepia with a gilt edge. The image in the center is similar to a print by Samuel Seymour after a painting by William Birch “Mount Vernon, the seat of the late General G. Washington.” The closest example of this image is found in a painting at Mount Vernon that includes three animals in the foreground and the figure of a man, which also appear in the image on the plate, but not in the images by Seymour and Birch.
