DescriptionSalt-glazed stoneware rundlet: barrel-shaped drinking vessel with incised wavy and combed lines accented with cobalt blue. One end inscribed "January / the 20 1825" and the other end with "Robert / Green / bag 20".
Label TextFounded by Branch Green in 1809, the Green family stoneware pottery was the first successful manufactory in Philadelphia to focus on stoneware production in that city. The manufactory continued under Branch Green's leadership until 1827 when it was taken over by the Remmey family. Branch Green's son Robert inscribed this rundlet. Robert Green was a potter like his father, but he was also listed in at least one Philadelphia city directory as a dealer. Dated January 20, 1825, this rundlet is the earliest known dated Philadelphia stoneware vessel. The inscription "bag 20" on one end of the piece may refer to the object's location within the kiln during firing.
