DescriptionTwo-handled five-gallon stoneware jug of elongated ovoid shape rising to deeply corded neck. High-arched ribbed handles applied at base of neck and top of shoulder with thumb print terminals. The piece covered allover in an alkaline glaze.
Label TextVery few two-handled jugs made by enslaved potter David Drake are known, and even fewer two-handled jugs are signed and dated. This handsome piece, the tallest jug recorded, is a monumental example of David Drake’s mastery of potting techniques. It was made during his time working for Lewis Miles while owned by John Landrum. Drake began working for Miles in 1840. Landrum died in 1846 and in 1849 Miles took possession of David Drake.
InscribedIncised at high shoulder in script: “L Miles Dave” on one side and “April 26 1842” on the other. Two slash marks incised above the date and five punctates below the date.
