DescriptionTeapot: slipcast feldspathic stoneware teapot covered with a clear smear glaze. The body is of a waisted drum shape with a flat base and molded reeding on the sides. It has a wide, slightly sloped shoulder, a scalloped gallery, and a domed cover topped by a flower finial. The tapering tubular spout is molded with a thin band of reeding and has an angled tip, and an extruded strap handle opposite the spout is molded with scrolling acanthus leaf motifs. Each side of the teapot has a rectangular panel containing applied relief decoration, depicting on one side the great seal of the United States and on the other a seated classical figure representing Peace, burning the instruments of war with a torch while she holds an olive branch in her other hand. The top corners of these panels contain spiderweb-like motifs, and beneath the panels are molded acanthus leaves. A chain of criss-crossed vine-like motifs interspersed with flowers is molded on the body just below the shoulder, while the shoulder itself is molded with an alternating pattern of acanthus and pointed leaves emanating from the gallery. The scalloped gallery features molded eight-point stars inside circles, while the cover is molded with twelve-pointed stars. The teapot is very minimally enameled, with blue lines outlining the base, bottom of the central molded panels, tip of the spout, outside edges of the handle, the top and bottom of the flower chain design, the scalloped edge of the gallery, and the leafy bottom edge of the flower finial. The centers of the molded stars are also picked out in blue.
Label TextClearly made for the American market as the molded pattern includes The Great Seal on one side, this teapot closely relates to archaeological examples of feldspathic stoneware teawares recovered in Alexandria, Virginia.
