DescriptionCandle stand of silvered gesso on deal; ten-sided top with relief scene of Japanese houses, plants, and flying birds, the rim carved in acanthus leaves. Stem with two leaf-encrusted balusters above a ball knob below which it is hexagonal, carved with leaf or husk patterns and tapering to the base. Tripod base with leaf-encrusted, voluted, S-scroll feet.
Label TextThe popularity of the exotic is expressed in the chinoiserie scenes executed in low relief on the tops of these fine stands. Originally silvered and part of the furnishings of Ham House, Surrey, these objects are among the rarest and finest examples of their kind.
ProvenancePair of candlesticks were said to once be part of the furnishings of Ham House before it became public property, by Woolsey and R.W. Symonds.
