DescriptionSilver candlestick, one of a pair: Cast, square, shell-base supports with cast with cast stem with molded knops and a circular candle socket with three encircling bands. Removable bobeche with square flange ornamented with shells at the corners
Label TextSilver candlesticks were rare and readily recognizable expressions of wealth and status in early America. This square, shell-based example is of a typical form by a prolific London silversmith who specialized in the production of candlesticks and chandeliers, but it is remarkable for its engraved coat of arms used by the Lightfoot family of Virginia. Its original owner was probably William Lightfoot (1722-1764) who lived at Teddington, Charles City County, and Yorktown. The candlestick, along with its mate and a snuffer tray made in 1749-1750 by Simon Jouet, also of London, descended in the Lightfoot, Minge, and Bolling families.
