Label TextWilliam Pitt , 1st Earl of Chatham (also known as Pitt the Elder) was a British politician who served as Prime Minister during the Seven Years War of the French and Indian War between the years 1756-1761. His leadership and focus on British Empire, led England to prevail against the French in North America and India. He was a strong voice against the Stamp Act, which taxed American Colonies to pay for the French and Indian war, even presenting a speech on their behalf. A staunch imperialist, he was an advocate of compromise between the British Government and the American Colonies, rather than full independence.
