DescriptionFigure of a Swan: circular base supports molded seated figure of a swan. The marbled clay body of the figure is decorated with patches of cobalt blue on its wings; the eyes and beak have been picked out with dark brown slip.
Label TextThe papers of New York merchant Frederick Rhinelander mention “small image toys” or stoneware ornaments in 1774 and again in 1778. An order placed in the earlier year with his Liverpool suppliers specified agate and cream figures. This agateware figure of a swan falls within the category of objects denoted by Rhinelander and other merchants in the period. The archaeological record in early colonial Virginia gives proof to such objects and fragments of a similar swan have been recovered in 18th century Virginia.
