DescriptionSoft-paste porcelain saucer with trimmed foot. The saucer has asymmetrical, hand painted decoration. There are two birds on a branch on one side and one butterfly on the other side. The outer rim has a line of red, iron oxide.Label TextThese may be the "round water cups and saucers" or the "water cups and saucers with birds" listed in the 1755 Chelsea catalog. Englishmen did not normally drink water with their meals in the eighteenth century, but finger bowls, usually called "water glasses,” were used in some homes.
