DescriptionMolded, soft-paste porcelain bust of a man identified as William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland. His head tilts slightly to the right. He wears a wig tied at the nape of his neck with a bow. He wears a breast plate with a ruffled collar and a Ribbon of the Order. No color has been applied and the bust has been attached to a wooden stand.Label TextMost familiar of the three royal busts attributed to Chelsea, this model appears also in salt-glazed stoneware. Sir Everard Fawkener, secretary to the duke of Cumberland when the bust was made, was at the same time associated with the Chelsea factory. Some believed that through Fawkener, Cumberland secretly subsidized the factory, although no evidence substantiates this theory.
