DescriptionSilver candlestick with a faceted socket between two octagonal collars, octagonal inverted baluster stem with a lower band and between two stepped octagonal knops, and an octagonal base with counterranged faceted sides.
Label TextEach of these candlesticks was made in three parts, undoubtedly patterned directly from imported English examples. The shaft or stem was cast in halves and soldered together; this component was then soldered to the cast base. These candlesticks are marked on the top of their bases and are engraved with the unidentified armorial crest of a winged unicorn’s head. Edward Winslow was a successful silversmith and a large amount of work survives from his shop, including such rare forms as plates and a standing salt. At least two other pairs of candlesticks are known with his mark.
InscribedEngraved with crest of a winged unicorn erased (on panel opposite mark).
Markings"EW" over a fleur-de-lis within a shaped shield on the face of the back panel of the foot for Edward Winslow (1669-1753)
