Label TextThe subject of this engraved portrait was identified after comparison with the image of the engraved portrait of William H. Cabell (1772-1853) was the son of Colonel Nicholas Cabell, Sr. and Hannah Carrington Cabell (q.v.). His portrait was taken around 1807 in Richmond Virginia by the French artist Charkes Balthazar Julien Fevret de Saint-Memin. Cabell received a law degree from the College of William and Mary in 1793 and three years later was elected to the state legislature. After two terms as governor of the state, he was appointed judge of the Virginia General Court . In 1811 President James Monroe appointed him a member of the court of appeals. Cabell was made president of that court in 1842.
