DescriptionCylindrical posset pot with three bird feet, S-shaped tubular spout, and two strap-loop handles with applied rolls and divided scroll terminals. Domed cover with the same handles and spherical knop with bird finial. White tin glaze decorated in blue line and wash: on one side of the spout, the arms of the London Company of Carpenters; on the other side, a circular shield and the inscription "F k E 1676." Scrollwork around both the arms and the shield, with a shell crest above the tassels below. On the cover, a laurel wreath containing the same inscription.
Label TextThis posset pot relates in shape to three privately owned examples dated 1674, one of which also has bird feet. Another of the three has the same scroll decorations encircling the inscription and the arms of a London company. A mug in the CWF collection (accession 1960-7) has the same scroll decoration encircling the arms of a different company. The mug, like the three similar posset pots, is dated 1674, and it has floral decoration similar to two of them. The coat of arms of the Carpenters' Company appears on the posset pot shown here. The London attribution is based on the form and the glaze.
InscribedCoat of arms of the Carpenter's Company and Circular Shield with inscription "K / F E / 1676."
