DescriptionFolding pocketbook of purple silk embroidered with a design of a bird on a branch (exterior) and a flowering cornucopia (interior). Marked in cross stitch on exterior, "MATILDA LYNCH/CHARLTON," "R" and "W".

ProvenanceCame out of a Montgomery County, Va. collection. Matilda Charlton was the daughter of James Charlton (1752-1825) who moved to Southwest Virginia between 1763 and 1768. He married first Abigail Bowles in 1776; second Hannah Ziegler. Matilda married a Miller. See Kegley, EARLY ADVENTURERS ON THE WESTERN WATERS, Vol. 1, p. 331.
