DescriptionAPPEARANCE: semi-circular arm rail with rounded ends is surmounted by a shorter crest rail with ogee-molded ends; three turned, tapered stiles; two vasiform and curved splats with chamfered edges; two molded shoes; square slip seat frame sits on top of two front seat rails (not within them); deep, shaped aprons to conceal chamber pot; marlborough side and rear legs; cabriole front leg with pad foot and two scrolled knee brackets.
CONSTRUCTION: all elements of mahogany except as noted; crest rail glued and screwed to arm rail; stiles round tenoned into arm rail; splats tenoned into arm rail and seat rails; shoes integral with rear seat rails; seat rails (with long aprons) tenoned into legs; scrolled knee brackets on front leg face glued to adjacent aprons; oak slip seat support strips glued and nailed to rear seat rails and right front rail (left strip missing); red pine blocks glued and nailed to inner surfaces of left front skirt (remnant of chamber pot support).
Markings"RW" die stamped into top of center (front) leg; III chiseled into left rear shoe/seat rail assembly.
ProvenancePurchased by source from a Woodard family (estate sale) in southeastern Virginia. Family has a long Virginia history but also collected antiques in the 20th century.
