DescriptionThis rectangular panel of salmon-colored silk has a closely repeating design of stylized fruit trees sprouting from V-shaped scrollwork. The design is completed in two shades of bleached linen. The fragment is basted to a glazed lining. The whole is faded with three vertical stripes that are not faded: one along each edge and one four inches from the left edge. The edges are raw. There is a small portion of the selvedge remaining on the right edge consisting of two warps of green yarn.
Label TextThis fragment is made of both linen and silk using a compound weave that has two sets of warps and two sets of wefts. The design is made by switching which weave is visible on the front of the fabric.
MarkingsStamped in purple on reverse of the lining: “3583” and “NOT FOR SALE.”
ProvenanceThis is one of a large collection of "decorator samples" from the firm of MORANT & COMPANY, obtained by Morant & Co., 91 New Bond Street, London, before 1930. The firm, later known as LENYGON & MORANT, was transferred to New York about 1930.
