DescriptionThis rectangular panel of brown satin has a design of white ribbons and yellow, green, blue, and pink flowers. The ribbons lay in S-curves entwined with floral bouquets. They are decorated with diaper patterns that give them a lacy effect. They are entwined with vines of star-like flowers and bouquets of roses and other flowers. The left and right sides are selvedges. The selvedge is held in a plain weave, eleven warps wide (1/8”). The warps are green and white, some being a single color and some the two colors twisted together. The bottom is turned back and attached with a whip stitch. The top edge is raw.
Label TextUnlike a true brocade, the colored yarns forming the flowers on this fabric are incorporated into the main body of the fabric and travel the width of the textile. This technique is called lancé.
Markings“NOT FOR SALE” stamped twice in purple on reverse. “3874” stamped in purple on reverse. Three oval purple stamps in corners, “MORANT & CO./INTERIOR DECORATORS/TO HIS MAJESTY” and two rectangular purple stamps in bottom corners, “MORANT & CO./81 NEW BOND ST,/LONDON, W.”
ProvenanceThis is one of a large collection of "decorator samples" from the firm of MORANT & COMPANY, obtained by Morant & Co., 91 New Bond Street, London, before 1930. The firm, later known as LENYGON & MORANT, was transferred to New York about 1930.
