DescriptionRectangular sideboard table with a marble top with thumb-molded front and side edges; the frame of the table consists of wide cavetto molded sides and front with a bead around the lower edge of the same; supported by four cabriole legs carved on the knees and knee returns with foliate motifs, with paw feet carved to have wisps of hair on the knuckles and tendrils of hair carved on the backside of the ankles, feet supported by balls.
Label TextProbably made in London, this table was imported into the Chesapeake in the 18th century and was used by the Sothoron family at a house called "The Plains" in St. Mary's County, Maryland. Gentry families in the Chesapeake often imported pieces of English furniture to compliment their locally made goods.
ProvenanceThis table has a history of ownership in the Sothoron family of "The Plains," St. Mary's County, Maryland. The Sothoron estate, "The Plains" is part of a land grant made to the family in Charles County, MD (now St. Mary's County) in the 1600's. The table is believed to have been in the family since the 18th century.
