DescriptionA three-quarter-length portrait of a young standing man wearing a dark peach-colored coat and waistcoat over a white shirt and neck cloth. His body is turned slightly towards the viewer's left. His proper left arm is slightly extended and, in that hand, he holds a white flower. His proper right arm is crooked to support a black hat; this hand is gloved and, in his hand, he holds the matching white glove.

The 3-inch molded, black-painted frame is original.
Label TextRobert was the son of Barent and Maria Wendell Sanders and an older brother of John Sanders (1964.100.2). He married Maria Lansing in 1740; after her death, he married Elizabeth Schuyler in 1747. Robert served as the second mayor of Albany, where he died.
Robert's long peach colored coat and vest are similar in design to those worn by his brother, and he stands in an identical interior setting with a landscape vista in the far background. See 1964.100.2 for further commentary regarding the artist.
