DescriptionKettle on stand. All parts are enameled, except where noted, both inside and out. The painted decoration is in opaque enamel (famille rose) colors. The structural support is a copper alloy to which is fused a white or green enamel ground, the painted designs rendered in natural colors. (A) Kettle has scrolled copper alloy handle insulated with woven natural and black split-rattan and swinging on copper alloy hinges, the cabochon-shaped handle junctures being the only parts enameled. The globular body and S-shaped spout have a white ground. The body is decorated with a leaf and floral band around the opening at the top. There are two Chinese garden scenes on the sides, one showing a boy flying a dragon kite and a man and lady seated and playing flutes. The lady is seated on a garden stool. The other scene shows a man and lady playing a game while a maid is bringing them tea. These gardens have traditional rocks, fence, bamboo, etc. A floral border surrounds the lower part of the body and consists of various rosette flowers, both simple and composite. At base of spout is a stylized orchid. (B) Conforming lid with white ground on which is rosette design around which is a gilt pattern on a dark reddish-brown background; surmounted by a copper alloy bud finial. (C) Spirit stand has a circular kettle ring with scalloped upper edge supported on three cabriole legs with coper alloy shell feet. The spirit lamp ring is attached to the legs of the stand by struts. All parts above the feet are enameled predominantly in pale green with the principal areas decorated with floral or abstract forms.
