DescriptionThis rectangular panel of green satin has a light pink lancé design of scrolling floral stems. There are two different motifs, which alternate in rows. One has a large, feathery leaf on the bottom, with three small lilies and one large flower. The other is more symmetrical with two large flowers and several smaller flowers. The bottom edge is whip stitched. The top edge is pressed back and loosely basted. The left and right edges are selvedges. The selvedge is 1/8” wide, held in a satin weave in the colors of the supplementary wefts. There are remnants of green thread along the left and right edges, and remnants of blue thread along the bottom edge. There is a small length of pink thread in the top right corner.
Label TextIn the second half of the seventeenth century, formal sprigged patterns were extremely popular. The sprigged pattern on this fragment is larger than most.
