Label TextJust as American goldsmiths and silversmiths found clever ways to bring underweight coins up to par, other times they needed to officially bring the weight of a coin down for local use.

Noted silversmith Ephraim Brasher officially "regulated" this coin by removing a plug of gold from the center of the piece and then partially closing the hole with a blow from his "EB" punch. This regulated coin was likely meant to circulate in New York City as a $4 coin during the early 1790s.

The mark struck on this coin is the same one used to mark Brasher's famous gold "doubloons" (worth $15, New York money) produced in 1789.
Markings"EB" mark of Ephraim Brasher struck in the center of the piece.
