DescriptionOctagonal Chinese porcelain plate with canted corners, edged in brown and decorated in underglaze blue. Rim bears a complex pattern of scrolls, diaper work, and fish roe. The cavetto is decorated with band of latticework that encircles a central landscape motif of fences, mountains, and a large jardinière filled with flowering sprigs.
Label TextThis octagonal Chinese export porcelain plate is decorated in underglaze blue with a large jardiniere in the sloping foreground and water, boats, buildings and a mountain beyond. A section of fence appears at bottom and the lotus plant in the jardiniere dangles roots to the ground.

This plate has a family history of ownership by the Ball family of Virginia (the donor is a descendent of both the Ball and Lee family). Its original owners were most likely James and Lettice (Lee) Ball or their son and daughter-in-law, James and Frances (Downman) Ball. (Genealogical research documents in object file)
