DescriptionDeep circular pewter dish with a single reed rim
Label TextIn 1814 Samuel Kilbourn left the oversaturated community of pewterers in his native Connecticut. He moved with his family to Baltimore, where he plied his trade as a pewterer and tinplate manufacturer until his retirement in 1836. The rise in consumerism in the early 19th century created a demand for more goods, thereby providing opportunities for skilled tradesmen. Like Kilbourn, many that were trained in Europe or the northern states moved to southern cities where opportunities abounded.
