DescriptionWhen a yellow pine backboard slides down it reveals a row of two secret drawers behind the heavy cornice molding in which were found the receipts and estate papers of John Warford (1750-1812) of Loudoun County, Virginia.

Mentions wife Mary, sons John (deceased), James, and Elijah, daughters Hannah Gregg, Ann Palmer, Sarah Flitter, Mary Warford, and Lydia Warford, grandson Samuel Warford, son of John, deceased, and Rhody Miles (formerly Warford) who may be the mother of grandson Samuel.
Executors: wife Mary and sons James and Elijah.
From Ancestry.com, it appears that this John Warford is the individual by that name, b. 1750 Hunterdon, NJ, d.1812. Loudon Co., VA, son of John (b. 1723, Hunterdon, NJ, d. 1791, Loudon Co., VA) and Alice Warford. He married Mary (d. 1832 Belmont, Ohio) before 1774.

3. Appraisal and inventory of estate of John Warford, taken May 11, 1812 by Jonas Janney, Eli McKnight, and Archibald Young.
Mentions various livestock, household furniture, carpenters and blacksmiths tools, and weaving implements.
Lists "Drawers & spice box $18.00." Except for the beds and bedding, the drawers and spice box are together the most expensive pieces of furniture listed on the inventory.
Lists bed, bedstead, and bedding, saddle, and heifers of three youngest children, Elijah, Mary, and Lydia by name. These items were willed to those individuals by John Warford (see will).

4. Letter dated July 31, 1791 from Jacob and (Alse?) Crabs (?) and John and Agnes Dillon, Washington County to Mr. John (Young?), Near Leesburgh In Loudon County, Virginia.
The writers requests information about sister Ivy who was living with Mr. John Wiett in the county near Leesburgh.
The writers ask the recipient to give the letter to "Grandfather Warford and Uncle John Warford."
This letter was reused as a wrapping for the estate papers of John Warford.

5. Letter from Blincoe to executors of John Warford's estate, Leesburg, May 21, 1812. The letter states that a copy of John Warford's will is enclosed with Blincoe's opinion on the sale of his personal property. The opinion was written at the bottom of the will. (see will)

ProvenanceMay have originally been owned by John (1750-1812) and Mary (d.1832) Warford of Loudoun Co., VA. Descended in their family. Papers relating to John Warford's estate remained in two secret drawers in the spice box. Included on John's estate inventory was an entry for "Drawers & spice box $18.00." A typewritten note indicated that the box was brought to Belmont Co., Ohio in 1798 by Elizah Warford, great grandmother of CM Palmer, Maple Rd. City. John Warford's widow Mary and some of her children moved to Belmont Co., Ohio during the late 18th or early 19th century.
