Both photos are laid on cardboard mounts with margins all round and the photographer's decorative imprint (name, address, etc.) on the backs.
InscribedIn script in pencil on the front of his photo, in the middle of the lower margin, is: "No. 1."
In upright script in ink on the reverse of his photo at the top is: "Thomas Newton, son of Thomas Newton/and Amy Hutchings. Married Martha/Tucker."
In script in pencil on the front of her photo, in the middle of the lower margin, is: "No. 2."
In upright script in ink on the reverse of her photo at the top is: "Thomas Newton (infant) and his Mother/Martha Tucker Newton, wife of Thomas/Newton."

MarkingsImprinted at left in the lower margin on the front of each photo is "COOK."
Imprinted on the back of each photo, in a decorative arrangement not necessarily reflected by the line-end indicators given here, is: "GEO. S. COOK,/RICHMOND, VA./PHOTOGRAPHY/No. 913/MAIN STREET./ INSTANTANEOUS PROCESS USED/EXCLUSIVELY/DUPLICATES CAN BE PROCURED AT ANYTIME".
