Label TextUp until the late 1760s, American colonial paper money was denominated in English-style pounds, shillings and pence. Switching to Spanish dollars in 1767, the colony of Maryland issued notes that also stated their value in Sterling, although at a lower rate than their English counterparts. Even though the denominations were the same, colonial American paper money was always worth less than the equivalent amounts in gold and silver were worth in England.Thus, these $1 notes of Maryland's January 1, 1767 issue have the distinction of being America's first one dollar bill.
