Britain, 1780-1790
Silk woven with silver-gilt threads, trimmed with silver-gilt lace, sequins, gimp, and tassels, bodice lined with linen.
From the collection of James Frere, 1953-849

Formal clothing retains conservative design features long after they have gone out of style. Although the wide skirt was typical of mid-eighteenth-century styles, the deep point at this gown's back waist suggests a date in the 1780s. The crisp silk textile is dotted with metallic silver threads woven from selvage to selvage, a type of fabric called silver tissue.
