Label:Long before the English entered the race to establish colonies, the Spanish had been using and striking coins in the Western Hemisphere. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella had these coins struck for circulation in Santo Domingo, the island that today is divided between the Dominican Republic and Haiti, site of Christopher Columbus' famous landfall. These copper pieces have the distinction of being the first coins made for use in the New World.
