Apron, yellow silk, with embroidery

Origin: England
OL: 20 1/4" OW: 29 1/2"
Ribbed silk embroidered with silk and silver metallic threads.
Gift of Anonymous Donors
Acc. No. 1971-1540
Woman's apron of gold silk taffeta embroidered with polychrome silks and couched silver bullion in a pattern of floral meanders trimming pockets (unmade), and outer edge. In the corners, two flower sprigs further decorate the apron, which is gathered with a drawstring at the waistline (not original).
Label:Elegant silk and silver embroidery edges the apron and outlines what were originally intended as two pocket openings near the waist. The openings were never cut open for pockets, however. The apron would originally have been gathered or pleated to a narrow waistband made from a ribbon or tape. The waistband has been replaced by a later casing. Aprons such as this were professionally embroidered.
Provenance:Ex Coll. Mrs. DeWitt Clinton Cohen.
