Wet drug jar

1720-1740
Origin: England, London (probably)
OH: 6 1/4"; DIam: 4 1/4"
Tin-glazed earthenware (delft)
Museum Purchase
Acc. No. 1967-20
Cylindrical jar with sharp shoulder, cylindrical neck, and knopped spout. Whitish tin glaze decorated in blue with standard trumpeting cherub cartouche and inscribed "No. 8." Base glazed.
Label:This jar is unusual not only because it is cylindrical, but because it is a cylindrical wet jar. Moreover, the trumpeting cherub motif is not common, and jars inscribed with a numeral rather than the name of a drug are rare.
Provenance:Joseph Vizcarra, Lombard, IL
Mark(s):No
Inscription(s):"No. 8"
