Woman's collapsible bonnet hat of gold silk taffeta (ribbed silk), shaped with cane sewn into channels. 5 1/2" brim frames the face. The high crown is shaped and held into position by the cane inserts. A ruffle covers the back neck. The hat is trimmed with applied ribbon trim with corded edges and cream silk, or "blonde", lace. Brown taffeta ribbons. The hat is hand stitched.
Label:This collapsible bonnet carries the tradition of wired or caned calashes of the eighteenth century into the following century. Unlike the balloon-shaped calashes of the 1770s and 1780s, this example is shaped to follow the hair and hat styles of the 1820s.
Provenance:From the collection of Tasha Tudor.
