Child's coat, white wool with blue trim
Origin: America, Virginia, Williamsburg
Wool with silk and cotton linings. Silk shagg trim. Silk tassle.
Gift of Mrs. Anne Geddy Cross
Acc. No. 1998-19
Child's coat of white wool, inner lined with batting and lined with silk and cotton. The pointed collar is trimmed with a band of blue silk shagg, terminating at center back with a tassle. The coat is cut in a full tent shape, with wide pagoda sleeves.
Provenance:Descended in family of Robert Francis Travis Cole and Elizabeth Labby Cole. Family tradition stated that the clothing was worn by Catharine Boush Cole of Williamsburg, Virginia (1843-1846). However, the style of the coat relates more closely to 1860. The coat may have been worn by another daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Cole, either Elizabeth Wilmer Cole, 1858-1860, or Virginia Travis Cole, 1860-1867.
