Origin: America, Virginia, Pocahontas Co. (?)
OW: 78" OH: 85"
Wool and cotton
Gift of Shirley and Melvin Hogsett
Acc. No. 2006-33
This is a red, blue, and natural color cotton and wool coverlet woven in an overshot weave structure in a "Double Bow Knot" or Hickory Leaf" pattern. It was woven in two panels and centered seamed. The coverlet has selvages on sides and rolled hem at top and bottom.
Provenance:The coverlet descended in the family of Melvin Hogsett, the donor. Written family records indicate that the coverlet was carried to California from Virginia in August 1886 by Melvin Hogsett's great-great grandmother, Leah Tinsley Hogshead. She was born in 1818 in Virginia. She married John Hogshead (1816-1879) of Pocahontas County, Virginia in 1837. The name of Hogshead was later changed to Hogsett.
