Woven Overshot Coverlet

Origin: America
92' x 70" (233.7 cm. x 177.8 cm.)
Cotton and wool
Bequest of Margaret H. (Mrs. Robert S.) Davies
Acc. No. 1975.609.3
This is a rectangular coverlet woven in dark blue and orange wools with natural cotton in an overshot weave technique. The coverlet consists of two woven panels center seamed. It is woven in a simple geometric pattern.
The weaver is unidentified.
Label:Although overshot bedcovers were produced in quantity in America, especially during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the inherent fragility of their weave structure abetted the deterioration and destruction of many examples, making documentation of patterns of usage more difficult. Such study has also been hindered by the fact that overshot coverlets were seldom inscribed in any fashion.
Provenance:From the estate of Margaret H. Davies of Laurel, Maryland; ownership prior to the donor's is unknown.

The weaver of the coverlet is unidentified.
