Woven Overshot Coverlet by Unknown Maker

1840-1860
Origin: America
96 3/4" X 99 1/2"
Cotton and wool
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Batdorf
Acc. No. 1979.609.6
This is a woven coverlet in shades of brown, blue, and natural cotton and wool yarns. It was woven in an overshot weave structure in two loom widths that have been center seamed. It has applied fringe at sides and foot. It is in a geometric pattern.
Label:The term "overshot" describes the action of a supplementary weft which floats or overshoots the foundation weave. The band of overshot patterning incorporated in the applied fringe constitutes an unusual and particularly pleasing feature of this example.
