Woven Overshot Coverlet Fragment

mid 19th century
Origin: America
Overall (H x W): 32 x 9 1/2in. (81.3 x 24.1cm)
Cotton, wool
Gift of Anonymous Donors
Acc. No. 1979.609.16,2
This narrow, rectangular fragment has a geometric pattern in red, white, and blue. The pattern, which resembles plaid, is created through an overshot weave structure. Instead of creating the plaid through color, each section is patterned with a different diaper, including zig-zags and repeated diamonds. All edges are raw.
Label:While this coverlet looks like plaid, the design is created by alternating both color and diaper patterning with an overshot weave.
Provenance:Given to Colonial Williamsburg Foundation by anonymous donors.
Mark(s):No marks, signatures, or inscriptions
