Woven Overshot Coverlet Panel by Unknown Maker
Overall (H x W): 99 x 27 3/4in. (251.5 x 70.5cm)
Bequest of Mrs. Jason R. (Grace H.) Westerfield
Acc. No. 1974.609.19
This rectangular overshot coverlet panel is woven in blue and natural cotton and wool yarns with a geometric pattern. The design consists of squares bordered with rectangles, possibly a variation of the snowball pattern. The short ends are rolled hems, and the long ends are pressed back and stitched.
Label:The pattern of this coverlet is created by a supplementary weft floating or "overshooting" over a plain-weave ground. The patterns for overshot coverlets were geometric. Overshot woven coverlets were and continue to be popular because they could be produced on simpler four harness looms.
