Textile, mordant painted and dyed chintz

1710-1720
Origin: India
19.5" X 26.5" (49.5 cm X 67.3 cm)
Cotton, mordant painted and resist dyed
Gift of F. Schumacher and Company.
Acc. No. 1978-195
Fragment of cotton, mordant-painted and resist-dyed in indigo and madder colors of red, pink, lavender, and purple on a white ground. The design consists of exotic flowers and leaves on curving stems, forming an all-over pattern. Fragments of two narrow floral borders are present along one edge. The textile is pieced and seamed down the center. Border edges are ragged and missing parts.
Label:The presence of fragmentary borders suggests that this textile was once part of a larger panel known as a palampore.
