18-19th century
Origin: Italy
8 1/4" x 8 1/2"
Linen (fiber identification by textile lab)
Gift of an Anonymous Donor
Acc. No. 1971-1658,1
This is a nearly square, white linen sampler with 25 patterns of drawnwork in a variety of patterns, five rows of five squares. Its edges are rolled.
Label:This nearly square sampler, which bears no inscriptions or marks that can indicate who made the sampler or where or when she completed it, is likely from 18th or 19th-century Italy. It was made by removing most of a ground fabric's warp and weft threads and embroidering on top of the remaining threads. The 25 different drawnwork designs in this sampler come together to create a visual checkerboard of patterns.
Provenance:Ex-coll: Tomlinson, Ginsburg and Levy, Mrs. DeWitt Clinton Cohen, Leopold Ikle.
Note on board: "Bought from Ginsburg and Levy, 1954 in remainder lot of Mrs. Cohen's Collection. Bought remainder at lump sum/Italy."
