DescriptionBox: Rectangular top with molded edges; oriental scene in center of top, in circle with red border; design on black ground mostly obscured; appears to have been trees, flowers, gazebo (upper left), arched bridge (left of center) and water (lower portion). Central design surrounded by grained effect in imitation of oyster shell marquetry; corners of top japanned as central portion (black ground outlined by red) in quarter circles. Molded edges of top painted black. Sides of box with grained effect similar to that of top; red painted borders. Front of box also with oyster-shell marquetry graining and red borders; in center is japanned panel with bird (left) and pagoda (right) painted in greens, browns, and red over gessoed ground. Scene surrounding these mostly obscured; some foliage discernible. Rectangular molded (quarter-round) base, painted black, with traces of gilded leaves on corners. Butt hinges replaced original cotter-pin hinges.
