DescriptionRectangular cast iron side panel from a six plate stove with a raised molded frame. Chinoiserie design with intertwining C and S scrolls in Baroque manner forming a screen in front of a central Buddha-like figure, holding a branch of the Bo Tree, and flanked by potted flowers.Label TextHeating devices known as a "six plate" stoves evolved from "five plate" jamb stoves as the contraptions became freestanding, acquired charging doors, and their own vents. Their side panels were ripe for embellishment, and this example stands in stark contrast to the symbolically adorned and religiously themed stove plates produced in earlier periods, especially in Pennsylvania. Looking to the most current fashion in the post-French & Indian War period, this side plate was cast with a central figure, perhaps Buddha, surrounded by scrolling foliage and Chinoiserie. Although unsigned, this plate is thought to have been cast at Marlboro Furnace, near Stephens City, Virginia.
