DescriptionThis is a tied Beiderwand woven coverlet consisting of two 36-inch loom widths seamed at center. It was woven in dark blue wool and natural cotton. The top edge is shirttail hemmed. It is self-fringed on bottom edge. The centerfield pattern is "four roses" alternating with starbursts, the interstices filled with small stars. The side borders consist of spread eagles alternating first with fruit trees, then with weeping willows. The bottom border consists of the same design but is vertically elongated. There is no top border. Woven into the two lower corner blocks are standing lions with tails waving around the year date of "1849." The name "SARAHVANSCOIT" (Sarah Van Scott?) is woven back and forth in the lower border; the name is complete only at each side edge.
