DescriptionSpur; U-shaped heel-band with curved shank for steel rowel of 6 short points; swiveled silver buckle with steel prong and round button; a round button also on side opposite buckle.Label TextJames Geddy, the Williamsburg silversmith, advertised for sale in the Virginia Gazette "Spurs" (March 5, 1767); "plated spurs" (October 27, 1768); "fashionable plated spurs" (October 4, 1770); "Loop, studded, and Chain Spurs" (June 4, 1772); "Chain, Loop, and Stud plated Spurs" (July 21, 1773); and "plated Spurs" (November 11, 1773). Geddy specified that they were imported, except in the first instance, when they were included with other articles usually imported. The plated spurs were most likely close-plated on steel. All the spurs he advertised were probably of this conventional type, with slender sides, arched necks, and small rowels.
