DescriptionPortrait of a young lady dressed in a white dress that is accentuated with a light blue ribbon around her torso. Her fingers are laced and proper right arm rests atop a table that also holds a red drape. A straw hat, resting on her back, is supported by light blue ribbons that weave in between her fingers. The background is a landscape scene with trees and clouds. The wide gilt frame includes a thin decorative edge near the painting with a wider, concave surface with scrolling designs in the corners on the outside.Label TextOne of America’s most celebrated portraitists, Stuart is known today for his remarkable likenesses of George Washington, of which he produced nearly one hundred. Washington’s iconic status as father of his country led to a huge demand for his image and the gifted Stuart was happy to oblige. Patrons such as the Gilmors were impressed by the artist’s connections and eagerly sought their likeness by him.
