Label TextThis is the second state of Arnoldus Montanus' map of "VIRGINIAE/ partis australis,/ et/ FLORIDAE/ partis/ orientalis, interia/ centiumq regionum/ NOVA/ DESCRIPTIO," which was originally published in 1671. Pieter van der Aa purchased Montanus's copper plate, removed many of the decorative elements and re-engraved them. He added a new cartouche that featured tobacco sheds and Native Americans. Additionally, van der Aa added some names to the map including Vieille Virginie (Old Virginia) in the area of North Carolina. This second state was published around 1729.
This highly decorative map is a derivative of a 1606 map of the southeast by Dutch mapmaker Jocodus Hondius Sr. In 1606, Hondius updated of Gerard Mercator's map of the southeastern coast of North America in order to include newly discovered information about Virginia. This representation of the region persisted well into the eighteenth-century.
