Soules was a teacher, translator, and writer who produced works in a variety of genres, including British, French, and American foreign policy. His account of the American Revolution was informed by Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau's personal experience of the events; Rochambeau's influence and Soules' own background result in an emphasis on French participation in the war.
