Label TextThis early 20th century cupboard was painted by artist Peter Hunt while living and working in Provincetown, Massachusetts around 1935. Hunt decorated various types of objects from furniture to textiles with painted motifs suggestive of Pennsylvania German and French Provincial folk art. This cupboard, with its depiction of Joan of Arc, represents his French Provincial inspired style. Hunt's work was quite popular in the 1930s and 1940s, allowing him to expand his shop to include other artists working in his signature style. Their work was retailed locally as well as through major New York department stores.
