DescriptionPitcher of bulbous form with flared foot and c scroll handle, central body decorated with black transfer prints on each side, one illustrating the surrender of Cornwallis with inscription below "CORNWALLIS / Resigning his Sword at York Town Oct. 19. 1781"; and on the opposite side a shoulder length portrait of a young uniformed Lafayette crowned in glory, shown flanked by two Grecian clad women, holding a laurel wreath above his head and topped by the name "LAFAYETTE" in an arch. These prints are on a yellow ground, flanked above and below with copper luster and an oval front panel transfer-printed with an image of fruit.
Label TextThis piece and others with similar transfer printed scenes were made to commemorate not only the end of the American Revolution, but also the Marquis de Lafayette's tour of America in 1824-25.
