The lower half of the sampler consists of a large two-story house with pediment, and six chimneys. The rooftop of the house is flanked with initials, a basket of fruit/flowers on the left and a rose sprig on the right. The initials on the left read: "MHG"/ "MSNE"/ "CR." The initials on the right read: "[?] I [K] U E" / "FS CSG" / "CF."
There are additional initials below the house. On the left: "RMB[?] EI HC" and on the right: "[?] T EF IC RW." There is a fence and gate at the bottom of the sampler.
Stitches: cross over two, double cross, eyelet (Reverse of sampler was not available for study; double threads on arm of cross stitches suggest that some of the cross stitches may be reversible)
Label TextIt's likely that Charlotee G. Flint intended to stitch the name Charlotte on her large and colorful sampler. Whether she could spell her own name or not, she certainly was adept with her needle using cross, reversible cross, double cross, and eyelet stitches on her work. The sampler is one of three almost identical samplers that were work in the months of April, May, and June of 1811 by schoolgirls who surely sat side by side under the watch of their teacher, Elizabeth Cowling Eley Moody.
